Wichita mom, boyfriend charged with murder in toddler's death

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A Wichita mother and her boyfriend have been charged with first-degree murder for the death of the woman's 2-year-old son.

Anthony Bunn died Sunday after suffering head and face injuries at his Riverside home on Friday morning. His mother, 22-year-old Elizabeth Woolheater, and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Lucas Diel, were charged Wednesday.

Woolheater and Diel remain jailed on $250,000 bond each, and they are not allowed to have contact with each other or anyone under the age of 18. Their next court appearances were scheduled for May 23.

Allegations of child abuse involving Anthony were reported in October of last year. District Attorney Marc Bennett said that the case was again reviewed on Tuesday.

"Upon further review, there remains insufficient evidence to support criminal charges arising from that October investigation,” Bennett said.

Tony's grandfather said the family wants justice for the toddler and that they appreciate the community support.

"It’s all about Tony so his message can be out," Zak Woolheater said. "Keep focusing on the congressman. It’s a huge problem. We just need justice for that and (an) end to this epidemic."
