Boy arrested for shooting 13-year-old brother in east Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Police have arrested the older brother of a 13-year-old boy who was shot in the chest at their home on Monday. 

The shooting happened at around 12:15 p.m. near Murdock and Oliver. Officer Charley Davidson said there was a handgun in a bedroom where the brothers were playing a video game.

"The 14-year-old male was handling the gun when it was discharged and struck the 13-year-old male," Davidson said. 

The 13-year-old was hospitalized for treatment of a non life-threatening injury. His brother was arrested for juvenile criminal possession of a firearm, aggravated battery and possession of marijuana. 

Davidson said the shooting was not a random incident. Police continue to investigate.

Wichita police are investigating after a 13-year-old boy was shot in the chest early Monday afternoon. 

Officers were called at around 12:15 p.m. to the report of a possible accidental shooting in the 800 block of North Battin Street, near Murdock and Oliver. Lt. Ronald Hunt couldn't say whether the shooting was accidental or self-inflicted, adding that it was early in the investigation.

The boy was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. His mother and 14-year-old brother were also at the home at the time of the shooting, Lt. Hunt said. 

Police were not looking for a suspect.
