Largest animatronic dino park in North America to open in Derby

DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) -

Starting this weekend, families will be able to ride, roar and explore at Field Station: Dinosaurs.

"It's like going to the zoo, but instead of zoo animals, it's life-size, living, breathing, roaring animatronic dinosaurs,” explained Guy Gsell, executive producer at Field Station Dinosaurs.

Gsell says he put a lot of work into creating something everyone will enjoy.

“We also have over 40 live games, shows and activities, Jurassic golf, which is a dinosaur themed miniature golf course, and we have North America's first challenge dome,” he stated.

But it's not just about the exhibit, it's about science.

"We have songs, we have jokes, we have interactive shows, all of it is for a purpose,” said Gsell. “Everybody who comes here is gonna be learning; everybody who leaves here is gonna know they are a scientist."

The project costs about $11 million and is expected to bring around 100,000 people to Derby every year.

"We love this community. We love the Wichita area,” said Gsell. “We think it's perfect for a park like this."

As for admission, Gsell said, “We're very conscious of making sure our prices are good for a family. We know that everybody who's coming here is coming here because they have kids."

The park is located at Patriot Avenue and Rock Road. It opens Saturday, May 26
