Posted: Updated:
RUSSELL, Kan. (KAKE) -

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a teenage driver was reaching for his phone when he crashed his truck, injuring himself and a 14-year-old girl.

The crash happened at around 6:20 p.m. Sunday on 181st Street southwest of Russell. The patrol said the 16-year-old driver was heading south and reached across the vehicle for his phone, causing his Chevy pickup to enter a ditch.

The pickup then struck a driveway entrance and went airborne before its front end struck the ground, causing it to flip end over end.

The driver and his passenger were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Both were wearing seat belts.
