A former Kansas Congressman could be the next head of the State Department.

President Trump announced Tuesday morning that Rex Tillerson was fired as Secretary of State, and he wanted Mike Pompeo to be the replacement.

Addressing reporters, Mr. Trump told reporters that his decision was guided due to chemistry with Pompeo.

“I’ve always, right from the beginning, from day one, I’ve gotten along well with Mike Pompeo,” he said.

Pompeo had only been CIA director since January 2017. Prior to that, he served six years in Congress representing Kansas.

At the time, he was best known as a strong conservative voice on the National Security Council, specializing in Middle East affairs. He was also critical of Hillary Clinton’s and the Obama Administration’s response to the Benghazi attacks.

Despite that, KU Political Science Professor Patrick Miller called his fast rise through the cabinet interesting.

“If you think about the trajectory of his career, it might be normal for him to serve out four years at the CIA,” said Miller. “Then if there was a transition after a Trump re-election to move up to Secretary of State, that might be more normal.”

But part of that fast surge, could be credited to compatibility, the two reportedly like and agree with each other.

“How well the two get along, I don’t know the dynamics of the relationship,” Miller said. “But there’s clearly some trust there.”

Trust that will prove vital in the coming weeks as the U.S. has agreed to talks with diplomats and even the leader of North Korea.
