Man dies after shooting in Wichita grocery store parking lot

Police say a man who was shot in the head during a drug deal in the parking lot of a Wichita grocery store last month has died.

The shooting happened early Monday, February 19, in the parking lot of the Dillons at 135th Street West and Maple. Police said the 19-year-old victim was shot in the head during a possible drug deal.

Officer Paul Cruz said the victim, identified as Christopher Coley, died at a Wichita hospital early Monday morning.

Police say Coley and a 19-year-old woman were at the Dillons to sell marijuana to the suspect.

"During the drug transaction, Mr. Coley was shot in the head by the suspect. The suspect fled the area in a vehicle," Officer Cruz said.

Sedgwick County jail records show 21-year-old Raymond Alvarez Jr was booked the following evening for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, criminal possession of a firearm and a parole violation. All counts except for the parole violation were later released without prejudice.

The case has been presented to the DA's office and charges were expected Tuesday, Cruz said.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Alvarez has spent time in prison for aggravated battery. He was paroled in September.

Coley's death is Wichita's 8th homicide of 2018.
