ATCHISON, Kan. (KAKE) -

Authorities say one person was killed and three others suffered serious injuries in a crash in northeast Kansas on Wednesday.

It happened at around 10 a.m. on U.S. Highway 59 near Atchison. The Kansas Highway Patrol says an Oldsmobile was heading north when the driver failed to negotiate a curve.

The car went across the roadway and into a ditch before driving down an embankment and into a tree.

A passenger, 57-year-old Michael Bruce of Atchison, was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

The driver, 53-year-old Tracie Turpin, and two other passengers, 31-year-old Brandon Mottin and 49-year-old Martin Winfield, were also hospitalized with serious injuries.

The patrol's online crash log states Turpin was the only person wearing a seatbelt.
