Wichita police arrest teen shoplifters, recover stolen gun

Wichita police say one of two teenagers who shoplifted from a local Kohl's store pointed a gun at an off-duty Best Buy employee who was trying to help officers.

Officers were called at around 9 p.m. Tuesday to the report of a shoplifting at the Kohl's at 6900 West Kellogg. When they arrived, they saw the two 17-year-olds fleeing the store and pursued them.

Officer Charley Davidson said a 31-year-old Best Buy employee, who was not working at the time, saw what was happening and approached one of the suspects. The suspect then pulled a handgun and pointed it at the employee.

Both suspects continued to run, but they were quickly taken into custody. Officer Davidson said they took clothing from the store.

One of the teens was booked into the juvenile detention facility for theft and a warrant. The one who had the gun was booked for theft, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by someone under the age of 18, and possession of stolen property.

Officer Davidson said the handgun was reported stolen out of Derby.
