A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murders of a Kansas woman and her three children.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said David Cornell Bennett Jr., was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. He pleaded guilty in December to capital murder and three counts of first-degree premeditated murder for the November 2013 deaths of Cami Umbarger and her three children in Parsons.

As part of a plea agreement, Schmidt withdrew the state’s notice of intent to seek the death penalty.

Under Kansas law, Bennett received the only other sentence authorized for capital murder, life in prison without the possibility of parole. Judge Jack sentenced Bennett to three additional consecutive life sentences for each first degree premeditated murder count.

Testimony at a preliminary hearing in October 2014 indicated the victims were strangled. Testimony indicated Bennett repeatedly tried to contact Umbarger after they met at a club in Independence.
