Wichita Board of Education votes to shorten days, extend calendar year

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

The Wichita Board of Education approved a proposal to change the school calendar. For the 2018-2019 school year, USD 259 will change to shorter days, and a 190-day calendar. The first day of school for all students would be August 15th and the last day of school would be May 23rd.

Some key dates on the 2018-2019 calendar include:

Enrollment: July 30-31 and August 1

Orientation for new teachers: August 2 – 3

In service for all teachers: August 6 – 14

Orientation for sixth- and ninth-grade students: August 14

First day of school: August 15

Fall recess: November 22 – 23

Student Winter Recess: December 19 – January 2; Administrative Winter Recess December 20 – January 1

Spring recess: March 11 – 15

Last day of school: May 23
