NORTON, Kan (KAKE)- -

Students in Norton Community Schools USD 211 will be out of class Thursday and Friday due to widespread illnesses.

Administrators from this northwest Kansas school district said they plan to give the classrooms a deep cleaning over the weekend and classes will resume Monday.

"We determined, working with medical officials in the county, that it'd be best if we try to shut down a couple of days and also have the weekend to see if we can break the cycle," said Superintendent Phil Wilson.

Schools in Russell USD 407 called off classes on Wednesday due to extreme student and staff illnesses.

According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the flu has been blamed for nearly 100 deaths in the state. In the United States, there have 53 pediatric deaths related to the flu this season.
