new petition wants to convince the federal government to expand food stamps so people can to use them to buy food for their pets.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits only cover food for people. WGN reports that people in favor of the idea say a family’s financial situation can change and this would prevent families from having to give up a pet.

The petition is posted the website Care2. It has over 88,000 signatures of the 90,000 needed to be presented to the USDA.

“Being poor is hard enough without being expected to give up your companion," the petition says.

Any change would also likely have to go through Congress.
