WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A Wichita man who allegedly fired at officers and was wounded during a police chase has been charged with attempted murder and numerous other offenses.

Elijah Martinez, 21, was charged Thursday with attempted second-degree murder, three counts of aggravated battery, criminal discharge of a firearm, three counts of theft, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal damage to property and eluding law enforcement.

Martinez had been hospitalized since the incident on December 27. He was released from the hospital and booked into jail on Monday.

The chase began when a man saw two people stealing mail in west Wichita and called 911. Police said officers exchanged gunfire with Martinez outside a business on West Central.
