Wichita Fire Department warns residents after overnight mobile home fire

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

“Man I’m lucky to be alive right now,” resident Darrell Rooker said.

Awakened in the dead of night to a wall of flames. As the temperatures turn colder, people are doing anything they can to keep their homes warm for the winter. That’s what happened at one east Wichita home when a space heater started the fire.

“It went up like that, like a matchstick,” Rooker said.

“I pretty much lost everything in 5 to 10 minutes.“

Fire crews arrived to find flames and smoke billowing from the mobile home. Rooker was in disbelief when he saw his personal belongings on fire.

“When I woke up, I was trying to put the dang thing out and he had to drag me out of the house,” Rooker said.

The Wichita Fire Department is now using this opportunity to warn residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms.

“Smoke alarms do save lives,” Lt. Jose Ocadiz said.

“The homeowners were all evacuated. They were alerted by working smoke alarms. That is what saved their lives last night.”

Lt. Ocadiz said it’s important to make sure your smoke alarms are working properly.

“Make sure that they have batteries inside of them and make sure that everyone has a safe evacuation plan and a safe meeting place to be able to be accounted for,” Lt. Ocadiz said.

Fire officials say three people were inside when the fire broke out. One person was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.
