Towanda couple scratches off $100,000 lottery prize

Information from the Kansas Lottery:

It’s fair to say that Martin and Michelle Papps are extremely happy about the $100,000 prize they won playing a $20 Extreme Crossword instant scratch ticket.

Martin and Michelle Papps of Towanda told lottery officials they purchased two $10 instant scratch tickets and one $20 Extreme Crossword ticket December 23. The purchase was a little unusual for a couple of reasons.

“We don’t normally buy tickets at this store,” said Martin. “And we don’t usually play $20 Crossword tickets, but I had not been winning recently on $5 and $10 Crosswords, so I decided to try something different.”  The $20 Extreme Crossword ticket, bought at a different store, turned out to be a winning combination!

“We didn’t win anything on either of the $10 tickets, which we scratched off first, so I laid them to the side,” Martin said. “At first I thought we only had nine words, but Michelle recounted and realized we actually had ten words – what a surprise!”  Speaking of surprise, Michelle and Martin had a lot of fun surprising their four daughters and their spouses at the family’s Christmas Eve party.

“They didn’t believe us at first. They all told us we were nuts!” said Michelle.  “They had to all look at the ticket themselves before they believed we really had won $100,000.”

Martin and Michelle plan to use their prize money to pay bills, buy a new Chevy truck and renovate a house they’re going to flip. Martin is self-employed in the flooring business.

The lucky ticket was purchased at Jumpstart 2, located at 701 N. Main St. in El Dorado. There are still two $150,000 prizes remaining in the $20 Extreme Crossword game, as well as thousands of other cash prizes.
