The Wichita Police Department is mourning the loss of one of the members of their mounted unit.

Saturday, the WPD lost Champ, who had served with the department for six years as a mount.

The horse had knotted large colon, causing large amounts of pain, according to Officer Charley Davidson of the Wichita Police Department.  The department determined the problem caused the horse's GI tract to burst and they would need to humanely euthanize the animal.
