NESS COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) -

Agents with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation have arrested a western Kansas sheriff for several counts, including misconduct and giving firearms to a felon.

Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple was arrested just before noon Thursday. The KBI said in a news release that Whipple is accused of perjury, making false information, official misconduct and criminal distribution of firearms to a felon.

The alleged crimes are suspected to have occurred over the past four years.

Whipple made his first court appearance in Rush County District Court shortly after his arrest, the KBI said. Ness County Attorney Kevin Salzman is expected to prosecute the case.

This investigation is ongoing.

Whipple is a native of Ness County and was elected sheriff in 2000.
