Wichita city leaders to consider new panhandling law

Posted: Updated:
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita city leaders are proposing a new ordinance that would crack down on panhandling.

Tuesday, the City Council will be presented with a with a new ordinance that would make it unlawful for panhandlers to act in harassing or aggressive manners.

The current ordinance that prohibits panhandling is not enforced because it's considered a free speech activity.

Anyone caught violating the new ordinance would face misdemeanor charges.

If the City Council passes the ordinance's first reading at Tuesday's meeting, it will then go to a second reading at a later meeting.
