Derby takes aim at rare three-peat in Emporia on Saturday

DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) -

Emporia seems to be a home away from home this time of year for the Derby Panthers as they will play for a third straight Class 6A championship on Saturday.

This season did not come without adversity for the Panthers. Injuries, an early season loss to Goddard and having to travel away from Panther Stadium for much of the post season hasn't slowed them down.

They've been able to take care of business knocking top-seeded Lawrence Free State out of the playoffs on the road, coming from behind to beat Northwest in Sub-State and now they are 48 minutes away from a title.

"There's not once that we've talked about a three peat, you know we're talking about winning today right now and hopefully Saturday takes care of itself, but I'm happy for these kids, couldn't be happier. This has been a very rewarding year with these guys," head coach Brandon Clark said.

"They all meant a lot to the town, to the team and everything. But a three-peat has never been done, we already did the back-to-back, and it would mean a lot to everybody and a lot to me too," senior receiver Jack Taylor added.

"I mean, it would be amazing. It's all our, we've been set... the whole goal, this whole year is to win state again, I mean that's our only goal and we're one game away so that'd be great," senior running back Brody Kooser added.

Kick-off against Overland Park's Blue Valley North High School at 1 p.m. Saturday at Emporia State University.
