Wichita YMCA provides Thanksgiving meals at annual dinner

Posted: Updated:
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

The holidays are a time for gathering with loved ones, usually over a hot meal. That's exactly what had people waiting in line at the YMCA in downtown Wichita.

"Everybody's cold. We need to get inside to get warmed up and get some of this warm food," Allen Hammond said.

People lined up for hours just to attend the YMCA's 40th annual We Care dinner.

Last year the YMCA served more than 1400 meals to area families in need and this year was no different.  Melissa Mochowski has been helping with this event for over ten years. She says the reason is always the same.

"We feel that there is always a community need. No matter who you are or what your reason is to have a Thanksgiving meal, we like to be able to offer that to anyone,” Mochowski said.

Some said this was their only chance to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner.

"Otherwise we'd have no place to eat. We have no food at home," Becca Scriver said.

After enjoying their meal, they had the opportunity to bundle up with some cold weather gear.

"I see a lot of really nice coats, some almost look brand new,” Emily Pyle said.

Coats, hats, gloves and blankets are all necessities to stay warm during the winter months.

"It gives us a lot to be thankful for and helps us remember the holidays. Be thankful to all the people that donated and put their hard work in to make this possible,” said Becca Scriver and David Stamey.

Sometimes coming together with your community can make all the difference.
