Alert neighbor helps police solve College Hill burglary

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police have arrested three people after a reported burglary in College Hill.

Officers were called Tuesday morning to a burglary in progress near Lewis and Bluff streets.  A neighbor noticed something suspicious and called 911.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man in a vehicle.  A 21-year-old man was found in the attic.  A 19-year-old ran from the scene and was arrested a short time later.

Officers recovered items from the burglary and also stolen property from other burglaries.

Police said this is a great example of the "see something, say something" response they would like to have from citizens.

Police tell KAKE News all of the suspects have been arrested. K9 units and aircraft were assisting in the search for the third suspect who ran from the scene but police now confirm that person was arrested later in the day.

"Perhaps a crime of opportunity, when the homeowners were not home," said Wichita Police Sergeant Dan Binkley as he explained a possible motive for the criminals breaking into the home.

The homeowners say that this is the second time in a week that their home was a target.

Police are putting a lot of credit on an observant neighbor who saw the three suspects kick in a home's door.

"Outstanding job, citizens aren't always in a place where they are able to actually look out and see something happen, but this particular person did," Sgt. Binkley said.

A USD 259 spokesperson said Jefferson Elementary at 4615 East Orme was placed on lockdown, which has been lifted.

The College Hill neighborhood is well known for residents putting on a large trick-or-treat party on Halloween. Prior to the third suspects arrest, officers were confident those celebrating Halloween later in the day would be safe; now that the third suspect has been apprehended, that confidence is even higher.
