GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KAKE) -

Authorities say 29-year-old Cristino Umana-Garcia has died following an officer-involved shooting in rural Finney County.

Deputies were called just after noon Thursday to the report of a suspicious person in the rural part of the county, but an exact location was not provided. Garden City officials said in a news release that a deputy encountered a "hostile subject" armed with a knife.

The suspect was wanted by the Garden City Police Department on unrelated charges, the release said, and the sheriff's office requested that Garden City police respond to transport the suspect on those charges.

“After a standoff with law enforcement, the suspect is alleged to have become increasingly aggressive and came toward the officers in a threatening manner,” said Undersheriff John Andrews. “Officers opened fire fatally striking the suspect.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the suspect’s family at this time. This is an unfortunate situation,” said Garden City Police Chief Michael Utz. “We are thankful that our officers are safe.”

The officer involved, Master Patrol Officer Roger Montez, has been employed with the Garden City Police Department since 2008.

The KBI is investigating the incident, and the Garden City Police Department and Finney County Sheriff’s Office are each also conducting internal investigations.
