WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

The man accused of killing a Wichita doctor was charged with first-degree murder during his first court appearance on Monday.

Umar Dutt is accused of stabbing Dr. Achutha Reddy, 57, to death on September 13 behind his psychiatric office on Carriage Parkway.

Dutt appeared by video in a yellow jumpsuit, signifying a need for mental health assistance. The 21-year-old briefly spoke, saying he has an attorney, Kurt Kerns, representing him. Kerns said the case is complex and sad.

Dutt is being held on $1 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 3.

An attorney for Dutt's family released a statement Sunday night from Raj and Azra Dutt:

"it is with a heavy heart we send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of doctor reddy for their loss. our family has also suffered in ways immeasurble, and will continue to suffer the terrible toll and consequences of mental illness."
