Mayor hints at baseball field progress

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Mayor Jeff Longwell said dreams of a new baseball field are one step closer to reality.

Longwell told the Wichita Business Journal, "we're really pleased with the progress we've made."

City leaders told the Journal they'll have a commitment for a new affiliated minor league team by the end of the year, with one prospective team a possible deal.

The City Council approved building a new $60 million ball park this summer but only if Wichita lands a Triple-A or Double-A affiliate. Longwell would not discuss specifically which teams were involved in the negotiations.

In addition to the new field, development plans call for new walking and bike paths, as well as new restaurants and bars in the area.
