GREENWOOD COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) -

A Kansas man has been charged with murder in connection to the death of his 6-month-old son.

Deputies were called Tuesday to the Greenwood County Hospital for a report of possible child abuse. The sheriff's office says the infant had sustained injuries that were not consistent with the parents' initial story.

The child, identified as Cooper Clark, was flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment. The boy died Thursday.

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Wichita Police Department’s Exploited and Missing Child Unit. The investigation led to the arrest of the boy's father, 22-year-old Benny Clark, of Reece, Kansas.

KAKE News spoke with the boy's maternal grandmother, who says Cooper's mother was not home at the time of the incident. She adds that her family is distraught over the loss.

Benny Clark was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and child abuse. He remains jailed on $1 million bond, and his next court appearance is scheduled for September 5.

The family has opened a GoFundMe account for the child's final expenses. The site can be found here: http://www.gofundme.com/h2y3cf-coopers-memorial-fund The fund says a portion of the proceeds will go to Wesley Children's Hospital where they took care of the child in his final days.

Reece, Kansas is about 50 miles east of Wichita.
