GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KAKE) -

A Garden City couple could face attempted murder charges after their 2-year-old son, who has special needs, was hospitalized last year.

Kiala Pollman, 26, and Elias Allen, 31, were booked into the Finney County Jail last Friday. They face possible charges of attempted second-degree murder and child abuse.

Garden City police were contacted on September 9, 2016, after the boy was admitted to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Police say the child suffered from "extreme malnutrition and dehydration."

It is alleged that his parents did not care for him properly and neglected his medical care.

"The child required extensive medical treatment for life threatening conditions." the Garden City Police Department said in a news release. "The child has since been released from the hospital and is currently in foster care."

The investigation is ongoing.
