Wichita-area native is one of three Marines missing near Australia

Posted: Updated:

Family members have confirmed through a Facebook post that one of the missing marines in Australia is Cpl. Nathan Ordway, of Wichita.

Cpl. Ordway's sister posted on Facebook Saturday "my brother is among the 3 missing marines from the plane that went down off the coast of Australia... We were notified of this morning and have spent the day among the love of family and friends."

U.S. Military officials called off a search and rescue operation on Sunday for the three Marines. Their Osprey aircraft crashed into the sea, off the coast of Australia, while trying to land.

The recovery effort launched Sunday, and a family friend of Ordway's tells KAKE News that the marines went to their home at 1am Sunday to tell them that Ordway had been declared deceased.

According to ABC News, the Marines' next of kin had been notified, and Australia's defense force was assisting the Americans with the recovery effort.

The MV-22 Osprey was conducting regularly-scheduled exercises on Saturday.

Of the 26 personnel aboard the aircraft, 23 were rescued.
