UPDATE: one dead in motorcycle crash, highway reopened after helicopter mishap

Posted: Updated:

Butler County authorities say US-54 has been reopened after a helicopter landed on Highway 54, responding to a fatal motorcycle crash.

Sheriff Kelly Herzet says a 52-year-old man has died after driving left of center and crashing his 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The man's wife, 51, was also injured in the crash and is in serious condition. Herzet says the couple is from Overland Park.

The incident happened just before 10:00 Saturday morning.

An EagleMed helicopter was called to the crash to airlift the two to a hospital. The helicopter became grounded on the highway due to an undisclosed issue, closing the highway for several hours from Bluestem Road to KS-177.

Herzet says the patients were taken to hospital by ambulance instead, while a mechanic crew worked on the helicopter.
