Man killed while biking along Kansas highway

WICHITA COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) -

A bicyclist is dead after being hit by a passing car along a highway in Southwest Kansas. 

It happened about 10:10 p.m. Saturday along K-96 about eight miles east of Leoti.

The Kansas Highway Patrol Reports 61-year-old Eric Fishbein, of San Luis Obispo, California was headed east on his Trek mountain bike when a passing car hit him from behind. Fishbein was pronounced dead at the scene. 

ABC affiliate KEYT reports Fishbein was participating in the Trans Am Bike Race, a cross-country race that begins in Astoria, Oregon and concludes in Yorktown, Virginia.

The Trans Am Bike Race released a statement on their Facebook page offering support to fellow riders and condolences to the Fishbein family.

No one in the car was hurt. The incident is under investigation.
