WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

A 23-year-old convicted sex offender who was released from prison less than two months ago has been arrested for the alleged rape and attempted murder of a 7-year-old Wichita girl.

Jail records show Corbin Breitenbach was booked early Friday morning for rape of a child under the age of 13, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sodomy, burglary and a parole violation. He's being held in the Sedgwick County jail without bond.

Breitenbach was arrested just after 5 p.m. Thursday at his place of employment, Joe's Car Wash at 206 North Seneca. He had worked there for less than four weeks, an employee said.

Police said the crime happened at around 2:40 a.m. Sunday, June 11, at an apartment in the 1400 block of North Smith Ct., near I-235 and Zoo Boulevard. According to an earlier news release, the suspect "sexually assaulted a female child causing injury. The suspect left the apartment after assaulting the child."

An adult in the apartment was awakened by the crying child, and the girl told them what had happened. Tonia Benoist said that on the night of the attack, the girl's mother, in a panic, asked to use her phone to call 911.

"I thinks that's just pathetic, just utterly pathetic that this kind of scum can walk the earth," Benoist said.

The girl was hospitalized for several days.

"The child, at this point in time, is doing well and is with her family," Deputy Police Chief Gavin Seiler said Friday. "We are in contact with her and her family. Please, keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers."

Kansas Department of Corrections records state Breitenbach was sentenced to prison in April of 2013 for convictions on two counts of aggravated sexual battery of a 22-year-old woman and aggravated battery. He was paroled on April 28, 2017.

Breitenbach's last known residence was in the 5800 block of South Preston Trail in Derby, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation's offender registry, which lists him as compliant.

Deputy Chief Seiler said the case will be presented to the district attorney's office next week.

Agencies involved in the investigation include the Wichita Police Department's Violent Crimes Task Force, Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center, the DA's office, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, the Exploited and Missing Child Unit and the Internet Crimes Against Children unit.
