RUSSELL, Kan. (KAKE) -

The Russell County Sheriff's Office says a woman died Tuesday just hours after being booked into the county jail.

Sheriff Fred Whitman said in a media release the 63-year-old woman was found unresponsive about 11:50 p.m. during a routine check by corrections staff.

She was taken to nearby Russell Regional Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Whitman said the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was notified of the incident. An autopsy was performed. Those results were pending.

The name of the woman was withheld pending notification of family.
