SYRACUSE, Kan. (KAKE) -

A body found along a railroad in western Kansas is so decomposed that officials are not sure if it is male or female.

Hamilton County Sheriff Mike Wilson told the Syracuse Journal that body was discovered around 1:25 p.m. Tuesday by Burlington Northern employees. It was located four miles west of Syracuse. The cause of death and racial background of the person could not be determined.

The body was taken to the state crime lab for an autopsy. Wilson doubted the body is that of a Hamilton County resident, since no reports of missing persons are outstanding.
