WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police are warning residents about a crime trend on the city's northwest side in which thieves are breaking into vehicles and stealing property.

The department's west bureau said in a Facebook post Tuesday that more than 40 bags and purses have been stolen out of vehicles this year in the 21st and Maize and 21st and Tyler areas -- where New Market Square and the West Warren Theatre are located, respectively.

"If you live, work, shop or hang out in this area in between 21st and Maize to 21st and Tyler please do not leave purses/bags in your vehicle," the post said.

Anyone with information on these crimes is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111.
