Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez kills himself in prison

Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez died by suicide early Wednesday in Massachusetts, according to the Massachusetts Department of Corrections. 

In a statement, authorities said Hernandez had hanged himself with a bed sheet from his cell window just five days after being acquitted of two murder charges. He was already serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in the 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd. 

Hernandez was 27 years old.
