Wichita police have identified a 56-year-old man who was shot and killed while in his car in front of a home on the city's west side.

Lt. Jeff Gilmore said Stanislaus V. Saiz was shot at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the 600 block of North Edwards, near Central. An EMS employee called 911 after hearing gunshots and seeing a vehicle crash into a building at 2622 West Central.

"EMS technicians initially thought that this was an automobile accident." Lt. Gilmore said. "They soon realized that the victim had multiple gunshot wounds."

The technicians were unable to revive Saiz, and he was pronounced dead.

Lt. Gilmore said the investigation revealed that Saiz was sitting in his vehicle when someone on foot fired shots into the car.

In Saiz's attempt to get away, he drove north, crossing Central and striking the building.

Lt. Gilmore said Saiz had been parked in front of a home he had frequented from time to time. No arrests have been made.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Saiz was paroled in Sedgwick County and list him as an absconder as of February 23. He has prior convictions that include theft, burglary, obstruction, forgery and aggravated robbery. He had served stints in prison since 1984 and absconded from parole numerous times.

Sunday's shooting death is Wichita 12th homicide of 2017 and fourth over an eight-day period.
