Two rounds of severe weather on the way

Posted: Updated:

Strong and severe storms possible both Friday and Saturday across KAKEland. Both days, high wind, large hail and even isolated tornadoes will be possible.

Friday will start off dry and temperatures will soar into the 70s and 80s thanks to a stiff south wind. During the late afternoon and evening a dry line will form in Western Kansas. A few storms will likely form along this dry line that will roughly stretch from Liberal northeast through WaKeeney. Large hail topping 1" is the most likely threat followed by wind gusts that could top 60mph. While tornadoes do not look overly likely, they can not be completely ruled out. The severe threat will fade tonight after sunset.

The second round of severe weather will develop during the early to mid afternoon on Saturday along a cold front that will be draped across KAKEland. Initial storms will likely develop along the front that will roughly stretch from Concordia back toward Dodge City. Storms along this line could produce hail stones over 1", wind gusts that could top 60mph and even a brief tornado.  These storms will then gradually slide east toward the I-135 corridor. Look for showers and storms in the Wichita area between 6 to 9pm. Storms in and around Wichita could be severe. The severe threat will is expected to gradually fade as the storms push southeast out of KAKEland.
