WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

On the eve of the first nominating convention, a Wichita City Council member removed himself from the race for an open Congressional seat Wednesday.

"I have respectfully withdrawn from the 4th Congressional consideration," Pete Meitzner announced on social media. He was one of the Republican candidates hoping to replace fourth district Rep. Mike Pompeo, who left the House to become CIA Director.

"I’ve determined that my appointment to be the Republican nominee is unlikely," Meitzner admitted on Facebook. "I will support our congressional nominee, whoever that may be.... I will continue my dedicated service as a member of the Wichita City Council."

Republican will hold their nominating convention Thursday night at Friends University. Federal Election Commission records show five Republicans have filed paperwork for Congress. They are Joseph Ashby, George Bruce, Alan Cobb, Ron Estes and Eric Kidwell. Former Rep. Todd Tiahrt also is running, but the FEC website does not list him.
