WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

Wichita police have identified the 40-year-old man allegedly shot to death by his girlfriend while in an SUV on a freeway ramp.

Officers were called at 11:36 a.m. Sunday to a shooting at Kellogg and Meridian. Lt. Jeff Gilmore said the person who called 911 had stopped to assist a citizen who they believed had just been involved in a traffic accident.

"When they (the calling party) contacted that citizen, that citizen immediately advised them that she had just shot her boyfriend in the head," Lt. Gilmore said Monday morning.

Officers arrived and found the victim in the passenger seat of the SUV with a gunshot wound to the left side of his neck. The suspect was sitting on the curb at the time.

EMS arrived and pronounced the victim dead at the scene. He was identified as Richard J. Hamm Jr.

The suspect, identified through booking records as 30-year-old Crystal Kay Rotramel, was interviewed by detectives and jailed on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Lt. Gilmore said the couple had gotten into an argument a few minutes prior to the shooting at their home in the 2700 block of West Crawford.

"That argument continued in the vehicle as they left the residence. They initially traveled northbound on Meridian, traveled a few miles. As they went underneath Kellogg, they made a U-turn. As the vehicle was traveling back south, the suspect was driving the vehicle, immediately made a left turn to go on to the eastbound ramp onto Kellogg and at that time she did shoot the victim one time."

Gilmore said the couple had been arguing throughout the week, but he did not go into detail. They had been in a relationship for several months, he said, adding that the gun belonged to Rotramel.

Hamm's death is Wichita's second homicide of 2017.

Sgt. Joe Kennedy told reporters a 39-year-old man was found dead inside a Nissan Rogue on the entrance ramp from Meridian to eastbound Kellogg. A woman in her thirties has been detained for questioning.

Officers said at mid-afternoon they were not looking for any outstanding suspects.

Several roads were closed around the shooting scene while police investigated the case, but eastbound Kellogg traffic was not affected.
