HAYS, Kan. (KAKE) -

The Ellis County Sheriff's Office says an inmate committed suicide in the county jail on Saturday.

Sheriff Ed Harbin and County Attorney Thomas Drees release a joint statement saying that 42-year-old  Jeremy Lewis Davis was found hanging in his cell around 4:50 p.m. He was pronounced dead at Hays Medical Center about 45 minutes later.

Davis was a resident of Hays, having moved there from Texas, the statement said. He had been a jail inmate since June 4 on charged of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and felony possession of marijuana.

The KBI is assisting the sheriff's office and district coroner with the investigation. Authorities do not suspect foul play.
