Close to 100 protesters gathered around I-135 and 13th Street Tuesday night, heading for the entry ramp. The Kansas Highway Patrol told KAKE News Wednesday they set up a barricade halfway up the ramp to prevent people from walking on the highway, because being on the highway is illegal.

A line of Kansas Highway Patrol troopers stood calmly as protesters vented their frustrations toward those in uniform. Technical Trooper Chad Crittenden with KHP said, "We knew there was going to be a lot of raw emotion, especially with the things going on across the U.S. right now. We're used to raw emotions."

The protest was sparked by recent officer-involved shootings. Djuan Wash with Sunflower Community Action said, "What's going on what Philando Castile and Alton Sterling is awful and people are really angry, and we don't see anything that is happening to change the circumstances."

Both law enforcement and protest organizers agree Tuesday's protest was successful and peaceful. "We told the officers directly that we wanted to keep them safe, and we want to keep the protesters safe," Wash said. "We did not go out there to attack police."

Crittenden, like most law enforcement officers, say it's a tough time to wear the badge. "I understand that people are.... directing it at the uniform and what the uniform represents."

Wichita police officers say they did not make any arrests during the protest.
