Shocker legends invite kids to local basketball camp

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -

They're Wichita State legends.

Now, they want to pass their love for the game along to Wichita's youth.

Xavier McDaniel, Aubrey Sherrod and Cheese Johnson are joining Jeff Hill's Future All-American Basketball Camp and inviting 400 local kids to Next Level Hoops Academy in Bel Aire, KS for the four-day experience. The camp was created to give low income youth an opportunity to experience an athletic program which teaches the fundamentals of basketball. Hill says those skills can be used on and off the court, as the camp focuses on education while using community leaders to speak to the campers daily.

McDaniel, Sherrod and Johnson joined Hill on KAKE News at 11 Friday to speak about what the camp means to local children.

"I didn't just wake up one day and start playing basketball. Somebody helped me," said McDaniel, the 4th overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. "I played in this community. I lived in this community for over 30 years so this is just a way for us to give back."

In providing campers with scholarship opportunities along with trophies and lunches, the camp is searching for sponsors able to assist in making the camp a special experience for every child.
