Moving day at the U.S. Open came with a simple theme: birdies and eagles early; bogeys and even bigger numbers late.

The way the USGA setup Pebble Beach for Saturday's third round, players were given the chance to make up shots early, then challenged to hold on to their scores as the round progressed.

Few of the early finishers were able to match the task.

Davis Love III finished at 3-under 68, wrapping up his round just as the winds were beginning to kick up. Love went out in 30, then made a pair of bogeys and many scrambling pars coming in to get back into contention at 4 over for the tournament.

Many were not as fortunate. Kenny Perry shot 2-over 73. David Duval made five bogeys and a double on the back nine.
