In 1987, Schartz began his coaching career at West High School. It was a downtrodden program, with no hope and possibly, no future with football. But slowly, Schartz built the Pioneers into a winner.
Over his 18 seasons with the program, he compiled a record of 84-49. And his biggest near achievement came in 1997, when he lead the Pioneers to the 1997 State Championship game, losing to Olathe North.
Now Schartz will look to use that same blueprint he used 25 years ago, and try to create the same magic then.....to now.
West opens the season August 31st against Wichita South.
