Keenan Kruger threw for two touchdowns and ran for one as Silver Lake beat Conway Springs 27-21 to claim the Kansas Class 3A state football title.
Conway Springs had won five state championships in the last 10 years, four of them against the Eagles. But on Saturday, Silver Lake used a strong defense to slow the Cardinals' potent running game and pulled away in the fourth quarter.
With the game tied 7-7 at halftime, Silver Lake opened the third quarter with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Kruger to Brit Dewey, who grabbed the ball between four Cardinal defenders.
Conway Springs quickly answered with a 33-yard touchdown run by Cory Misak to tie the game at 14-14.
Silver Lake scored twice in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
