The only way it could be a bigger night out west in the Renwick School District would be if Garden Plain and Andale were playing each other. As it is, there will be some rabid fans in western Sedgwick County tonight. Garden Plain hosts rival Conway Springs, and Andale hosts red-hot Wichita Collegiate.
Conway Springs has won its first three games 68 to 0, 68 to 0 and 69 to 0. Garden Plain has lost the last two meetings, but this year's starter at quarterback, Aaron Tomlinson, entered last year's game as the backup down 19-0, and nearly led GP to a comeback win in a 19-13 loss.
Just north of that classic match-up is Collegiate-Andale. Collegiate is rolling through their new league schedule, and a second straight loss for Andale, which hadn't lost to an area 4A since 2005 before last week's 31-8 loss to Rose Hill, would send them reeling. It's a big, big night out west.
Northwest got the season back on the rails last week by pulling out a 21-6 win over East. The Grizzlies can makeover their season with a win at Carroll tonight. While it's likely Northwest will suffer its fifth straight defeat to the Eagles, we will find out a lot about the team's will to compete.
In this week's VYPE Magazine, we chronicle the game and players from the last time Campus beat Derby in football. While the Panthers are heavily favored to win their 18th consecutive game over the Colts this year, the 1988 Campus team which beat Derby was a special one, led by quarterback Carl Hall, someone who has been in thoughts of many Wichitans since his tragic accident last June.
Finally, what to expect from Salina Central at Hutchinson tonight? After the Mustangs blitzed Derby for 42 points and over 550 yards of offense in Week 1, Salina Central lost in Week 2 by an extra point to Andover Central. Is Hutch-Salina Central still a big game? Speaking of extra points, since Hutch failed to convert three of them in a one-point opening loss to Rockhurst, they've scored 112 points in three halves of play since. Expect more offense. Hutch has scored on average 61 points per game against Salina Central the last four seasons.
