After being twice shellacked to open league play, Derby travels to Maize in desperate need of not just a league win, but something positive to right the ship. The Panthers' start has been dramatic, in a bad way, but the next four games on the schedule are winnable, beginning tonight. Meanwhile, Maize with a win could be on its way to an undefeated September, which would be a huge boost for coach Craig Broadbent's program following three losing seasons.

Northwest and East play at Heights. Don't be fooled by the records, Northwest is 0 and 2 and East is 2 and 0, because Northwest has had a tough start against quality teams in Kapaun and Dodge City. The Grizzlies and Aces play for the first time since 2005, and an East win would be their biggest in the post Brown Brothers era.

I did not see this one coming last week: Andover Central 7, Salina Central 6. In just its second game in Class 5A, Andover Central knocked off what was supposed to be Salina Central's first serious contender since 2005. Now the Jaguars host McPherson, thought to be Hutchinson's chief nemesis come the postseason. Will Andover Central be a giant killer again?

If there were questions about Collegiate's ability to compete in their new league, the AVCTL Division 4, sophomore quarterback Markus Phox and a disciplined spread attack have answered them. Phox and company won with the run and pass at Rose Hill last week, reminding the state that, hey, we are the incumbent to the Class 3A state title. Tonight, they host Wellington, which is reeling after opening the season with two blowout, shutout losses.

Andale has beaten Rose Hill 12 straight, and after the Rockets 0-2 start against Buhler and Collegiate, it looks like it's going to be 13 straight. Andale is just once again rolling. Andale's match-up with Collegiate next week will be a big one.
