Oftentimes, consistency and cohesiveness is overlooked in high school athletics.

Teams are judged based on talent, college potential and pure statistics.

But for high school football programs like Conway Springs, having a model to build off year after year has translated into a perennial powerhouse.

The Cardinals have five coaches who have been on staff for the past 13 years in which they have gone 143-15 and won six state championships.

“Our coaches motivate the players to maintain the pride and tradition that we have had,” second-year coach Matt Biehler says.

Back on staff this season is former head coach Lelin George (2005-2008), who led the Cardinals to the 2008 state championship. He took last season off to prepare for his new role as an administrator at Conway Springs High School.

“Having the opportunity to work with these guys is invaluable,” Biehler said. “It’s an asset to have as a head coach.”

From a technical standpoint, the Cardinals will continue to utilize the single wing on offense and four defensive linemen and four linebacker set-up.

Throw in 15 returning starters and Conway Springs, despite the loss of Caleb Brill, is most likely one of the favorites in Class 3A.

“We have a lot of key players returning this season,” says Biehler. “We will have good depth in certain positions and several young players are expected to fill in.”
