Wingnuts Rally in Ninth to Top Amarillo, 6-5

The Wichita Wingnuts (31-18) defeated the Amarillo Sox (29-19) 6-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Wingnuts scored twice against Sox' closer Erik Draxton to pull out the win. Brent Clevlen and Abel Nieves opened the inning with back-to-back singles, giving both players three hits on the afternoon. After Cole Armstrong laid down a sacrifice bunt to first base, David Amberson tied the game with a line drive sacrifice fly to center field. Jared McDonald followed with a sharp, groundball single to center that drove in Nieves with the winning run.

Josh Dew earned the win in relief for the Wingnuts with one and one-third scoreless innings. Draxton took the loss.

Amarillo scored three times with two outs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead. With runners on first and second and two outs, Austin Gallagher chopped a single to center field that pulled the Sox within one run. Brandon Jones followed with a two-run double to left-center.

Wichita took an early lead for a second straight night when Clevlen, Nieves and Armstrong hit consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the second.

Amarillo took a brief 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Trey Ford Walked leading off, took second on Jason Martin's single to right, and scored the tying run on K.C. Serna's sacrifice bunt that resulted in a throwing error by Nieves. Chris Valencia drove in Martin with a sacrifice fly to right field before Wingnuts' starter Justin Klipp retired the next two batters to keep the Wingnuts within one.

Wichita re-gained the lead in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and no one on base, Jake Kahaulelio reached first on a throwing error by Serna at shortstop. After Kahaulelio took second on an errant pickoff attempt, John Rodriguez hit a two-run home run to left-center that made it 3-2 Wingunts.

Clevlen singled through the right side leading off the bottom of the fourth and scored three batters later on a two-out, RBI single to right from Colt Loehrs.

Klipp took a no-decision, allowing three runs, one earned, on seven hits in seven and one-third innings. Klipp walked one and struck out five.

Jason Mitchell started for Amarillo and also took a no-decision. Mitchell allowed four runs, two earned, on nine hits in seven innings. Mitchell walked none and struck out five.
