Wingnuts Open Spring With Victory Over Friends, 5-1

The Wichita Wingnuts defeated Friends University 5-1 in their 2013 spring opener at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Derek Perren broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning on a fielder's choice. After Jared McDonald walked to re-load the bases, Ryan Khoury pulled a double down the left field line to extend Wichita's lead to 4-1.

The Wingnuts tacked on a fifth run in the bottom of the eighth when David Amberson scored from second base on a dropped flyball by center fielder Evan Gilbert.

Joe Testa earned the win in relief with a scoreless top of the seventh. Nick Walters and Josh Dew added perfect frames in the eighth and ninth to close out the win.

Wingnuts' pitching combined for 17 strikeouts, including six each from Jon Link and Mike Burns. Link started the game and pitched three perfect innings while taking a no-decision.

Andrew Miller drove in Friends' lone run with a two-out, RBI triple in the top of the fourth.

The Wingnuts tied the game in their half of the fifth when John Rodriguez singled home McDonald from second base with two outs.

Josh Yates took the loss for Friends, allowing three earned runs in one and two-thirds relief innings.
Ryan Householder started for the Falcons and took a no-decision. Householder worked five scoreless innings while striking out four and walking two.

The Wingnuts took their at bat in the bottom of the ninth and plated two more runs with Perren and McDonald collecting RBI singles.

McDonald finished the game with three hits, including two doubles.

Wichita continues its exhibition schedule on Monday evening against Emporia State University. First pitch at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Tickets are just $7 general admission, and can be purchased at the gate.

The 2013 season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins Thursday, May 16th against the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Prior to the game, a ceremony celebrating the life of bench coach Brian Rose will take place.

Beginning this season, fans can use cash at all points of sale in Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Debit and credit cards will still be accepted. Fans can resolve outstanding balances on cash cards from previous years until June 1st, 2013.
