WSU women remain perfect in MVC with win over Drake

Led by senior Alex Harden’s 21 points, the Wichita State women’s basketball team defeated Drake, 88-55 Monday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.

Harden led the team with eight assists and six rebounds, while Alie Decker chipped in 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Michaela Dapprich added 15 points in the victory. The Shockers shot 49 percent (34-for-69) from the field and 46 percent (11-for-24) from three-point range, holding the Bulldogs to 39 percent (19-for-48) from the field and just 14 percent (3-for-21) from beyond the arc.

Wichita State opened the game up on a 14-0 run. Bonner started the scoring with a jumper from the free-throw line. Wichita State then hit three-pointers on each of the next three possessions, two from Harden and one from Dapprich, to force a Drake timeout. A Kelsey Jacobs steal and layup from Jamillah Bonner layup and a free throw by Jacobs capped the run for the Shockers.

Drake hit its first field goal at the 13:32 mark of the half to put the score at 16-3 Wichita State. The Bulldogs went on to rattle off five-straight points, but Harden answered with a two-point jumper with 12:34 remaining in the half to put the Shockers back up 12, 18-6.

Alie Decker started and capped a 13-0 run over five minutes with a pair of two-point jumpers to stretch the Shocker lead to 40-10 at the 4:50 mark. A three-pointer from Marissa Preston with just less than two minutes remaining in the half put Wichita State up 47-19 and the Shockers went into the locker room up 49-22.

The Shockers shot 18-for-37 (.486) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including 6-for-15 (.400) from behind the arc. Defensively, Wichita State forced 15 turnovers and had eight steals, including four from Kelsey Jacobs alone. Harden led all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three.

Bonner once again started the scoring for Wichita State, this time with a three to open the second half. Drake then went on a 6-0 run before a jumper from Michaela Dapprich put the Shockers up 54-28 with 17:35 remaining in the game.

The teams traded baskets before a block by Decker and transition layup from Harden sparked a 19-2 run for the Shockers. Decker hit three shots from behind the arc in the midst of the run, which saw Wichita State lead 81-42 at the 5:42 mark.

Newcomer Kayla White got her first field goal of the game with 1:20 left on the clock and Briana Jones chipped in two with 44 seconds left to finalize the game, 88-55.

The Shockers have a two-game road swing this weekend when they travel to Normal, Ill. to take on Illinois State Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4:05 p.m. and Indiana State Monday, Jan. 27 at 7:05 p.m.
